Rain gauge is used to measure rain fall at given period of time. It determining the depth of rain (usually in mm) that occurs over a unit area (usually one metre squared) and thus measuring volume of rainfall.
One mm of measured precipitation is the equivalent of one litre of rainfall per metre squared.
